Our business was started in 1954 by Allen Clark Jr. Allen and his wife Nancy moved to the Mad River Valley shortly after their marriage in 1947 in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. They had gotten word of a new ski area that was going to be constructed at what was to be known as and still is Mad River Glen. They bought an old run down farmhouse and spent their first year fixing it up and converting it into a small four-bedroom ski lodge. Nancy ran the ski lodge and Allen worked cutting the ski trails and helping to construct the original single chair lift at Mad River Glen. This lodge was known as The Clark’s and is still in operation today under new ownership and is now called Mountain View Inn.
After several season’s of working in different capacities at Mad River, then working for a building contractor, Allen came to the conclusion that in order to earn a reasonable pay check he was going to have to start his own business. Some personal friends approached Allen about building them a home. This house is located right here in Fayston on Route 17, and is still in use by the same family. Since that time, we have specialized in residential housing and renovations throughout the Mad River Valley and surrounding central Vermont area.
Allen ran the business successfully for over 40 years, before turning the reigns over to his younger son Tom in the early 1990’s. Allen passed away in 1997, but Tom continues the tradition of quality workmanship started by his father. Tom started in the business in his high school years and has carpentry experience spanning the past 40 plus years. Our company is now joined by a third generation member of the Clark family, Tom’s son Brooks. He is a most welcome addition to our company and has proven himself to be a quick study, already taking on some more complex projects, gaining his exacting abilities in just a relatively few short years. He fits the quality workmanship theme to a T.
We have been authorized sales representatives for Timberpeg Post and Beam Homes since March of 1984. This nationally recognized post and beam home manufacturer is of the highest quality workmanship offering excellent energy efficiency, great flexibility of interior and exterior design, as well as warmth and charm. We have built many of these fine quality Timberpeg homes in the Mad River Valley as well as in the surrounding central Vermont area. In 1998 we were awarded a First Place Gold Award of excellence from the Northern Vermont Homebuilders Association for a home of 2500 square feet or less in the “upgraded quality” category for a Timberpeg home built in Fayston.
2014 has brought some big changes, after doing business as AW Clark Jr. and Son Inc. for over 60 years we are now doing business as AW Clark Builders. We felt this change was necessary in order to promote what we do as a business with our business name.
Also in 2014 we became authorized dealers for Harvest Homes panelized homes, becoming a Harvest Homes dealer allows us to meet a wider range of clients budgets. While Harvest Homes can also be designed and styled to a very high end home we can design a much more budget driven home for clients as well, or clients can pick from a wide array of Standard designs. It also allows us to erect a home in a more timely and efficient fashion and get it closed-in in a much shorter amount of time, which keeps the interior of the home less susceptible to the elements of nature. Harvest Homes also come with an industry leading 10-year structural warranty.
